Micheal Gregg met his destiny in 1998, when he attended his first WNBA basketball game. From then on, he knew he wanted to coach. “It’s always been in me,” he said.
In the 7th grade, Mike started writing out plays in the classroom. He went on to help coaches at his Cleveland high school and the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. The latter is where he learned to network. He started making connections, and mentoring student-athletes. To Mike, it’s more than just sports. It’s about truly making an impact and proving that God isn’t limited to the four walls of the church. He believes the Lord gave him the ability to coach, so in turn…he will do the best he can with that gift.
His first crack at it came this summer in Massachusetts. He coached 11 year-olds at an all boys camp– Camp Greylock. It was a learning experience, and all the proof he needed to see college age and above is his preference.
The ultimate goal is be a Head Coach or GM in the WNBA, or hold a front office gig in the NBA. Even cooler? He just wants to make a positive impact no matter where he ends up.
In his own words, he told me:
“My advice for athletes or aspiring athletes would be to prepare now for what you want in the future. Although things may not be what you want now, you have to still prepare for where you want to be. No success will ever come if we sit and wait for it. And if it does, it won’t stay for long because we won’t know how to handle it. So, take advantage of not playing by working out everyday, watching film, reading, researching. Make this time worth it– so that when THEN comes it’ll be because you put in your time NOW.”
That’s sound wisdom if I’ve ever heard it. At this rate, he’ll reach his dreams before you know it…and pull others up with him.
Cheers Mike! We’re rooting for you along the way.
